In 2005, and for several years before, Troop 618's popcorn sales had been consistent, around $5,000, using the Take Order method. In 2006 I thought a much higher amount, specifically $15,000, was reachable through the Show and Deliver sales method. The Troop's Scoutmaster bought into this, too, and at our popcorn kickoff he explained an awesome trip he was planning for June this year in three National Parks out West. It sparked the boys' imagination and the race was off.
I didn't set goals for the individual Scouts. I showed them the prizes, trained them on how to sell and had them set their own goals. My son Stephen set a lofty goal of $8,246. The other boys set goals from $500 to $2500.
I made a chart to show the sales percentage toward their goal. For example, for Stephen to color in the first 10% square he needed $825 in sales. During Buffalo Bills away games I hosted Blitzes in the neighborhood near our Troop and had pizza and wings at my house. I also raffled off extra prizes within the Troop for filled up order forms.
The total sales for Troop 618 in 2006 were $22,161 - all done using the Show and Deliver method!
So, this year our Troop flew to Las Vegas, hiked through Bryce Canyon, rafted down the Virgin River at Zion, hiked into the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and camped at Coral Pink Sand Dunes. If that wasn't enough of an incentive to sell Trail's End, we also climbed three cliffs and rappelled down four others, then soared on a 720 foot zip line from one cliff to another. Now that would get any scout excited! This year we're thinking of going to Yellowstone.
All of us are passionate about Trail's End Popcorn. It truly is “America's Best Popcorn.”
